  1. According to “Coping with stress in a changing world” is written by Richard Blonna describe the effects of chronic stress on the following body systems: endocrine system, muscular system, cardiovascular system, immune system, nervous system, digestive system. So, I would like to share some information about the role of chronic stress in the development of many types of disease and illness.

I would like to express my views about the effects of stress from what information I read. What is the relationship between stress and endocrine system? In fact, the response of stress is intimately linked to endocrine system functioning. In additional, chronic stress has the potential to disturb with and turn off these endocrine functions. When chronic hormonal imbalance is linked to a host of illness, ranging from sexual dysfunction to lower immune system functioning. For example, when a pair couple cannot satisfy desire between each other, maybe it is caused by stress. It will affect a pair of couple’s sexual activities. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, sexual dysfunction is a disturbance or disease in desire, excitement, orgasm, or resolution of the sexual response cycle. When one of the partner always under a stress condition, who will always feel cannot fulfill partner’s desire or do not have any mood to undergoes sexual activities. This will bring affect relationship between partners or nothing illustrates the interaction between the mind and the body better than human sexual response. Therefore, this is an example effect of the stress and can bring a person get into trouble of mood. It is not only affect yourself, but also affect your partner and family.

Besides that, stress is both risk factor for psychological illness and a symptom of a broader problem. Therefore, we can define stress and psychological illnesses are very close relationship. When a person always under stress condition, he/she always

    1. Loss of concern for clients, family, friends
    2. Tendency a treat clients in a detached, mechanical fashion
    3. Raising discouragement, pessimism, and fatalism about work
    4. Decrease in motivation, effort, and involvement in work
    5. Anger with coworkers, clients, family and friends
    6. Loss of creativity and concentration
    7. Shortness of breath
    8. Easy get into disease such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder
    9. Always feel nervous without reason
    10. Cannot control mood and emotion for yourself
    11. Loss your tolerance
    12. Depression

Those are the bad effect from a stress, it will always beside you and you feels down and cheer up. It directly affects your daily life and work.

In contrast, a good stress also will bring a person always under good condition to continue his/her works. Positive effects of stress:

    1. Feel challenging, full of energy to do something
    2. Do something with our best to toward success
    3. Alive in face of danger

Therefore, we also can express stress also bring positive effects to a person and let the person faces her/his problems with optimistic mood! Besides that, we can courage ourselves with some funny words such like “there cannot be a stressful crisis next week. My schedule is already full”, we cannot avoid stress to cope to us, but we can use stress to stimulate ourselves and courage our friends. Stress is not a bad things, actually it is more better than any supplement and medicines.

  2. Stress has both positive and negative effect. When we come through in a pinch, put together that great presentation for work at the last minute, or increase our study time in response to an upcoming test at school, stress is the driving force behind our improvement. If it wasn’t for stress, we might not accomplish anything. When stress becomes chronic, lasting for long periods of time without any moments of rest or relaxation, serious physical or psychological problems can result. Some of these include:

    1.Anxiety or Depressive Disorder
Research suggests a link between high sensitivity to stress and the onset of serious anxiety and depression. Chronic stress can seriously diminish our ability to enjoy life, accomplish our goals, and maintain healthy relationships, all of which can affect our emotional well-being.

    2.Heart Disease and Stroke
A link has been shown between acute stress, heart disease, and stroke. The physiological stress response has serious affects on the heart and circulatory system, increasing heart rate and restricting the arteries. Over time, this action can lead to serious physical side effects including cardiac events such as heart attacks.

    3.Weight
People have different ways of coping with stress, and one way is to eat too much or too little. While this is sometimes emotionally motivated, it appears that it may be a physical response as well. Studies show that the stress hormone cortisol causes an increase in abdominal fat. In serious cases, some people turn to eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder to help them cope.

    4.Sleep Difficulty
Stress is one of the main factors in sleep difficulty. When a person is experiencing chronic stress or overwork, they often find it almost impossible to relax both mentally and physically. As they lose sleep, their body and mind are put under even more stress, which only adds to the problem.

    5.Concentration and Memory
Chronic and acute stress can cause difficulty with concentration and memory. Studies show that individuals subjected to stress have more difficulty with short-term and verbal memory, and stress makes it much more difficult to pay attention to detail, causing careless accidents and problems with work or academic demands.

    6.Pain
Chronic pain can be intensified by stressful experiences. Emotional distress has been linked to heightened sensitivity to arthritis and back pain. Physical tension can cause muscle pains and headaches, and this, too, can be intensified by emotional stress.

    7.Gastrointestinal Disorders
Stress contributes to such problems as irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, and inflammatory bowel disease. Even if these disorders don’t develop, people under a lot of stress often experience mild to moderate stomach discomfort, nausea, constipation or diarrhea.
Even though it can seem nearly impossible to slow down and de-stress, it’s important for maintaining physical and emotional health and balance.

  3. SHORT TERM EFFECT OF STRESS
When a person encounters a threat, his body gets geared up to handle it by the 'Fight or flight' response. During this response certain functional adjustments occur in the body. These changes persist till the threat exists. When the threat no longer exists, the body returns to normal. These immediate, transient effects are the short term effects of stress. This is a physiological response seen in all persons exposed to stress. The few functional adjustments which are responsible for the short term effects are diversion of the blood from less vital to more vital organs.
-Increase in the heart rate to supply more blood quickly.
-Increase in the blood pressure to supply blood efficiently.
-Increase in the respiratory rate to get more oxygen from the atmosphere.
-Breakdown of glycogen stores in liver and muscle to get more glucose.
-Formation of more glucose from non carbohydrate substances.
-These functional adjustments responsible for the stress effects on the body, manifest themselves with an array of signs and symptoms which include
    -Palpitation
    -Chest pain
    -Frozen shoulder
    -Cold clammy skin with gooseflesh
    -Flushing and feeling of warmth
    -Breathlessness
-Dry mouth with difficulty in speaking and swallowing
    -Abdominal discomfort
    -Aggravation of Peptic Ulcer
    -Loose stools
    -Increased blood glucose levels.
-Headache, back ache and neck pain
    -Depletion of energy stores
-Flare up of diseases like eczema, psoriasis, -arthritis
    -Difficulty in concentrating
    -Memory disturbances
    -Sleeplessness
    -Decreased sexual drive
    -Loss of appetite
    -Anxiety
    -Depression
    -Outbursts of anger

We can take the example of a guy appearing for a competitive exam for a job. When he has to study a lot, if he is not able to cover all the topics or if he finds the topics very tough, then preparation for the exams acts as a trigger for stress. The affected person undergoes either some or all of the above mentioned symptoms with their severity based on his susceptibility.

If he is able to complete all the topics and if he is able to understand what he studies, then the trigger is gone and he is relieved of the physical effects stress and his body returns to normal state.Another example is the stress caused by over-exercise. It is better to get some guidance before you do any exercise. For example, you can go through sites like to get info on six-pack exercises.

-Wow.. thats a lot for only short term effects. So do all of you by any chance have experienced any of these effects? A few of the effect above does occurs to me from time to time like when I'm preparing for exams or when i have to do presentation by using slide shows or others. Also when the due date to hand over my assignment is around the corner.
I believe all these signs & symptoms of how stress effect our body definitely occurs to us from time to time as we have responsibility to fulfill as student, employee, sister, brother, friends etc. However, don't ever let stress makes our life miserable but take action to overcome stress so that we can live a better life. Remember to make the best of life as we only live once. Wish all of us happiness and well being =)

  4. Haha.. gotcha!! from what i have read,it is a little bit the effect of stress. Stress symptoms may be affecting your health, even though you might not realize it. You may think illness is to blame for that nagging headache, your frequent insomnia or your decreased productivity at work. But stress may actually be the culprit.

Indeed, stress symptoms can affect your body, your thoughts and feelings, and your behavior. Being able to recognize common stress symptoms can give you a jump on managing them. Stress that's left unchecked can contribute to health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes.

Of course, if you're not sure if stress is the cause or if you've taken steps to control your stress but your symptoms continue, see your doctor. Your doctor may want to check for other potential causes.

Also, if you have chest pain, especially if it occurs during physical activity or is accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, nausea, or pain radiating into your shoulder and arm, get emergency help immediately. These may be warning of a heart attack and not simply stress symptoms.
